This election was held in order to fill an Academic Board vacancy in the lecturer constituency of the Napier University Business School, which arose as the result of the promotion of Kathy Mouat (School of Marketing & Tourism) to a Senior Lecturer post within the Faculty. Derek Johnston, in his capacity as Secretary to the Academic Board, called this by-election to fill the vacancy.

In order to make the voting process as convenient as possible, an e-voting system was used. Votes could be cast, using this website, from any internet-enabled computer anywhere. This e-voting system is hosted by Napier's International Teledemocracy Centre on behalf of the Academic Board. Derek Johnston acted as Returning Officer.
