Invisibility vs Transparency

Abstract

This paper outlines the challenges in designing for both memorability and invisibility in an e-democracy website for young people. It explains how these challenges could be met and how this will be evaluated. It looks at potential conflicts between the invisibility of the medium and transparency of process.

Achieving invisibility would encourage the users to focus on discussion, reflection and resolution, improving both their involvement and enjoyment. The site needs to be memorable to raise the profile of the organisation it serves, encourage the students to identify with it and return in their free time.

In terms of e-democracy it is also important to question the extent to which invisibility is not just achievable but desirable in this context. Here the effects of the medium need to be acknowledged to preserve a transparency of process.
