How can we increase our healthy life expectancy? Do we know how safe our food is? How can we improve our air quality?

Threats to public health are posed by food safety, by environmental pollution from agriculture and transport, by persistent toxic substances from industrial activity, and by the growth in antibiotic-resistant strains of some diseases. The EU has policy measures on air and water quality, and on chemicals and industrial processes which are harmful to health. An EU public health action programme is being considered. Does Scotland need its own public health action programme and if so what would we like to see in it?

Life expectancy in the UK is rising. However, healthy life expectancy is not increasing as fast as total life expectancy. Good quality and affordable health services are coming under funding strain from rising demand. How can we bridge the gap between health needs and health services?
